Tina Dabi’s IAS success story: Individual excellence and social change

The story of Tina Dabi is also one of deep and complex social change in India that has made her the first ever Dalit girl to top the UPSC examination.

Tina Dabi, the IAS Topper this year, is gracious and calm despite the pressures of the moment. She has read Roald Dahl as a child, is most struck by Jane Austen now and watches The Big Bang Theory regularly. She topped Lady Shri Ram College, among Delhi University’s most prestigious, and earned the title ‘Student of the Year’. And this, after she scored 100 per cent in Political Science and History in the Class XII ICSE board exams from Convent of Jesus and Mary.

A story of “patience and consistency”, as the newest IAS officer puts it herself.

But then, this story is also about her mother Himali Kamble’s decision, despite being a qualified electrical engineer, to put her own career on the side and give her daughters the benefit of her “education and time… like a tapasya”.

The story of Tina Dabi is also one of deep and complex social change in India that has made her the first ever Dalit girl to top the UPSC examination. As Lok Sabha MP and ex-civil servant Udit Raj tweeted, this “would not have been possible 40-50 years ago”.

Tina’s parents, both from the Engineering Services, do not speak much about this but are not in denial of the enormity of the achievement, either. They are clear that it is the enabling environment created over years, through generations of struggle and grit, that made a Tina Dabi possible. a big and prestigious examination the IAS is. We have had a string of engineers in the family but she will be the first IAS,” said Jaswant Dabi, Tina’s father.

Jaswant’s roots lie in Rajasthan’s Dabi village and he recalls how his grandfather struggled to make a life for his children. Today, Tina’s father is one among several engineers in the family — his father is one, his brother, too. His “sister is an educationist and a younger brother in the Merchant Navy.” Based in Jaipur now, his father Nand Kishore Dabi worked with the CSIR in Pilani.

“The real struggle was waged by my father and grandfather who was in the military and left it soon. My father taught in order to be able to study and make money to fund my education. We have never forgotten all that,” said Jaswant.

Tina’s parents met through common friends and got married in 1989, with the rituals involving their home states of Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Tina was born in Bhopal, where her parents were posted then, and studied there till Class 7 before moving to Delhi with the family in 2005.

Is Tina aware of how this is a moment of phenomenal achievement for others in her community? Her passion, she replies, is gender. She argues how “the world over, it is gender which is the glass ceiling, and therefore I decided I would work in Haryana”.

At their home in New Delhi, Tina’s paintings done in Madhubani style stand as a tribute to their time in Bhopal, when her mother would take her to exhibitions. Himali would insist that her daughters Tina and the younger Ria buy craftwork worth “at least Rs 10-15” to help craftspersons and connect with them.

So was there any pressure from Himali for Tina to be like that character from the movie ‘3 Idiots’ and choose medicine or engineering? Tina laughs and talks of how her mother “recognised that I would be able to do much more in Humanities”.

“After two months of science in class XI, she urged that I move. Many people thought it was a strange thing to do, but I could do so much more and I think Humanities has made me a much more wholesome person,” said Tina.

Himali has no contact with her family’s ancestral village Pulgaon, near Nagpur, but says Tina is not the first topper in the family — her father Purshottam Madhavrao Kamble, too, had topped school.

Both her father and grandfather, “found the story of Babasaheb (Ambedkar) deeply inspiring”, says Himali.

“My father was thankful that we did not have to face any exacting circumstances, as my grandfather was a station master and my grandmother did everything to push all our siblings to work, study and defy our circumstances. I always remember their struggle and remember to be humble despite the success over generations,” said Himali.

Other senior Dalit officers, too, are conscious of the “history of the moment” even if it is being celebrated only in hushed tones on WhatsApp groups — no one sure of how openly it should be marked.

P S Krishnan, an ex-IAS officer and an activist on issues of discrimination and exclusion, says the message about brilliant people from discriminated backgrounds shining on pure “merit” is “not anti-quota”.

“It makes clear what removing obstacles and taking away roadblocks and difficulties can do. Cases like these inspire a lot as they are a testament to how meritorious deprived communities can be, and their innate talent shines and cuts through all issues… a sign of great success and possibility for Dalits struggling to break free of their circumstances,” he said.

Dilwale’ is complete paisa vasool

It’s the holiday season and what better way to usher it in than with a Shah Rukh Khan release. 'Dilwale’ is complete paisa vasool. If you have to make a Bollywood formula film, make it like Rohit Shetty.

This one is a complete entertainer.

‘Dilwale’ does everything a Bollwood masala film should do - there’s love, there’s action, there’s drama, there’s song and dance - basically it’s value for money.

Rohit Shetty has mastered his craft. It’s commendable how seamlessly he blends the various elements.

The over-the-top action sequences, the mushy romance and dollops of melodrama play out like a well synchronised orchestra. He hits just the right chords, there isn’t a single jarring note.

Our director has upped him game, it’s no longer just mindless humour and cars being blown to pieces.

Shetty has made sure that this film hooks you from the very beginning. Kaali (Shah Rukh Khan) and Meera’s (Kajol) intriguing love story and why these two are thrown apart forms the basis of this potboiler. The flashbacks work well as they give you a little insight into what could have transpired between these star crossed lovers but never really give you their real story.

The second half of the narrative is peppered with generous doses of humour and it helps that Shetty lets Varun Dhawan completely own that. Varun’s comic timing is perfect and he is effortless in the little brother role. Rohit Shetty has shown rare restrain in this film, he doesn’t go overboard. The action sequence shot in Bulgaria is brilliantly executed and it stays with you because you don’t have too many of those.

Even the songs - they come at regular intervals but never slow down the pace of the plot. 'Gerua’ looks spectacular on the big screen, the locations, the clothes (despite the velvet jackets that Shah Rukh wears), the lead couple, they spell magic together. Even 'Manma’ and 'Janam Janam’ are well executed numbers.

I guess, it’s possible only in Bollywood, that our lead couple look better as they age. Shah Rukh and Kajol look disarming adorable together. Despite the years and the number of times they’ve worked together there’s a new intensity you see this time.

There’s a part in the 'Janam Janam’ song where Kajol wears a blue dress and it’s reminiscent of the green halter-neck dress she wore in the 'Ruk Ja’ song ( in 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’) and I couldn’t help but notice how amazingly chic and suave they looked now compared to then.

Sure there are some excesses, especially the King (Boman Iranian) sub-plot seemed completely unnecessary. In the acting department, Jhonny Lever is a huge letdown, saddled with some silly antics. The rest of the cast however, provide robust support. I thought giving Kajol’s character a manipulative bent was quite a nice touch. The director ensures that the twists and turns never let the pace slacken.

Signs of easing of situation in floot-battered Chennai emerged on Friday with no fresh rains and a sharp fall in water levels of Adyar and Kumbh rivers that were in spate following torrential rains as rescue and relief operations continued in full swing and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a Rs 1,000 crore more aid to Tamil Nadu.
Chennai city and its suburbs experienced a welcome break from the unpredented rains of the last 100 years, that resulted in a sharp fall in the discharge of waters from Chembarapakkam, Pondi and Puzhal lakes leading to reduction in the water levels of the two rivers that criss-cross the city.

After their separate aerial surveys of the flood-ravaged areas, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged for an immediate relief of Rs 5,000 crore, to which he responded by announcing Rs 1000 crore more for relief work in Tamil Nadu. This will be in addition to the Rs 940 crore already announced by the Centre.

Berhampur University and niversity of Tubingen to save palm-leaf manuscripts

The Berhampur University has sought assistance from the University of Tubingen, Germany, for digitalization of palm-leaf manuscripts. Around 2,500 manuscripts in Sanskrit and Odia are stored in the newly-established South Odisha Cultural Study Centre (SOCSC) inaugurated by higher education minister Pradeep Panigrahi on March 21. Most date back to over 150 years and have been collected from different places of south Odisha by scholars of the Odia department.

While Odia manuscripts belong to poets, including Upendra Bhanja, most Sanskrit ones are on tantra and ayurveda. Their conservation need urgent attention as these are in a pitiable condition, particularly after Phailin.

Professor Deepak Kumar Behera, Vice-Chancellor Berhampur University, Berhampur Odisha ,India CISCA board member, is professor and the Head of the Department of Anthropology, Sambalpur University, India. He obtained his Master’s degree (Gold Medalist) and Ph.D. from Sambalpur University, India. Professor Behera was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at California State University at Long Beach during the Fall semester 2007. He was also a Visiting Professor in the Dept. of Anthropology, University of Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa (2001, 2003), Dept. of Anthropology, University of Durban-Westville, Durban, South Africa (2001), Institute of Psychology, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2004) and Maison des Sciences de L’Homme, Paris, CNRS-EHESS, Toulouse (2006).
He has more than 80 research publications in reputed journals and edited volumes. Most of his publications are in the fields of children and childhood and tribal studies. Professor Behera has published seven volumes of Contemporary Society: Tribal Studies (Concept Publishing Company, New Delhi) jointly with Professor Georg Pfeffer of Institute of Ethnology, Free University of Berlin, Germany. He has successfully completed more than a dozen research projects funded by UGC, ICSSR, Ministry of Welfare, National Literacy Mission Authorities, Winrock International, Shastri Foundation, WHO, etc.
Besides being a member of several boards, he is also the Director-in-Charge of the new UGC Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy and Coordinator, MSW programme under the Sambalpur University. Professor Behera is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Journal - Sociological Analysis (North Carolina, USA), Boyhood Studies (New York, USA), Acta Academia (South Africa), and Practicing Anthropology (USA). Thirteen scholars have already received Ph.D. degree working under the supervision of Professor Behera.
Dr. Behera visited Aarhus in April 2011 as CISCA's third guest faculty. He was also in Aarhus in 2010, when he attended the workshop on Social In- and Exclusion in Contemporary India and beyond.

Berhampur University India inked MoU with German varsities

It will facilitate exchange of teachers and students between the two universities

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Berhampur University and University of Tubingen of Germany on Saturday.

This MoU would facilitate exchange of teachers and students between these two universities and also joint research projects between these two universities in the field of social sciences. According to director of college development council of Berhampur University, Bishnu Charan Choudhury, this is the first time that Berhampur University is coming up with such an MoU with any foreign university.

Dignitaries present

The signing of the MoU took place at the Biju Patnaik auditorium on Berhampur University campus. Vice Chancellor of Berhampur University Deepak Kumar Behera and head of department of social and cultural anthropology department of University of Tubingen, Roland Hardenberg, signed the MoU of behalf of the respective universities. Teachers, students and staff of Berhampur University and dignitaries of Berhampur were present on the occasion.

Signing of MoU was followed by the Sadasiba Tripathy Memorial Lecture. The speakers were Prof Hardenberg and his wife Andrea Luithle-Hardenberg. Prof Andrea is also from department of social and cultural anthropology of University of Tubingen. They spoke on their socio-cultural anthropologic studies in India.

Jagannath cult

Prof Hardenberg gave an elaborate analysis of Sri Jagannath cult of Puri and the rituals related to ‘nabakalebar’ of the deities at one of the four revered ‘dhams’ of Hindus. It may be noted that ‘nabakalebar’ rituals which are usually held in 12 years are to be held in Sri Jagannath temple next year. During ‘nabakalebar’ the old deities are replaced by new ones which match the reincarnation theory believed by the Hindus. Prof Hardenberg said although he could not enter the Sri Jagannath temple as non-Hindus are barred from entering it he made all efforts to get information needed for his research from most authentic sources. He said that ‘nabakalebar’ of the Sri Jagannath cult was a unique tradition.

Prof Andrea spoke on her research related to the Jain ‘Bal Munis’ of western India.

Peter Berger, Professor of Indian Religion and Anthropology of Religion, University of Groningen, plans to visit Berhampur University for research collaboration

Berhampur University has tied up with the University of Groningen, Netherlands, for cooperation and exchange of fellows in research areas of mutual academic interest.

The University of Groningen has a department on comparative study of religion, focusing on Indian beliefs and their faculties have shown interest in collaborative research studies with Berhampur University. Peter Berger, Professor of Indian Religion and Anthropology of Religion, University of Groningen, plans to visit Berhampur University for research collaboration from December 2015 to February 2016.
Deepak Kumar Behera, Vice Chancellor, Berhampur University stated to the media, "We have signed MoUs with different institutes in the country and abroad for collaborative research, exchange of faculty members, conducting seminars and workshops and above all, to expand academic interest areas.”

Pratap Kumar Mohanty, Director, International Collaboration stated that the University of Groningen is the fifth foreign university to sign an MoU with BU. The other foreign universities are Aarhus University, Denmark, University of Tubingen, Germany, University of Abomey, Benin and Walsh College, Michigan, USA. The University is also working with the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. It has introduced three add-on courses in collaboration with NIRD, and launched the Spoken Tutorial Project with IIT Bombay.
